UIPM DISCIPLINES

The Lebanese Federation of Modern Pentathlon is committed to developing and promoting the five core disciplines recognized by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM): fencing, swimming, Obstacles, laser shooting, and running (Laser Run). These disciplines are combined into one sport—Modern Pentathlon—designed to test an athlete’s endurance, skill, strategy, and mental strength. Through national and international participation, we aim to grow this dynamic sport across Lebanon and inspire a new generation of multi-sport athletes.

Fencing Discipline

Fencing is one of the five core disciplines of Modern Pentathlon, officially recognized and governed by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM). In this discipline, athletes compete using the épée in a round-robin format, where each bout lasts up to one minute and the first to score a single touch wins. If no touch is scored, both fencers register a defeat.

Fencing in Modern Pentathlon tests an athlete’s strategy, speed, precision, and mental focus. It plays a critical role in the overall competition, contributing significantly to the athlete’s total points. In major UIPM competitions, a bonus round is also held on a raised piste in front of spectators, adding excitement and energy to the fencing experience.

Swimming Discipline

Swimming is a fundamental discipline in Modern Pentathlon, officially recognized and regulated by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM). Athletes compete in a 200-meter freestyle race, with the objective of achieving the fastest possible time. The event is timed, and points are awarded based on performance, with faster times earning higher scores.

This discipline tests the athlete’s endurance, technique, and speed in the water. It is typically the second event in the Modern Pentathlon sequence and plays a key role in building momentum and point advantage for the remaining events. Swimming is conducted in a 25-meter or 50-meter pool, in accordance with international standards set by UIPM.

Obstacle Discipline

The Obstacle Discipline is a newly integrated and officially recognized event in Modern Pentathlon by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM). Inspired by obstacle course racing, this dynamic and fast-paced discipline challenges athletes to demonstrate agility, strength, coordination, and speed as they navigate a series of physical obstacles. From climbing walls to crawling tunnels, balance beams, and monkey bars, each obstacle requires precision and control under time pressure.

Introduced as part of the sport’s evolution, the Obstacle Discipline aims to engage a younger audience, promote accessibility, and increase the sport’s appeal globally. It is now included in international UIPM competitions and has become an essential component of the future Olympic format for Modern Pentathlon.

Laser Run Discipline

Laser Run is the exciting and action-packed final discipline of Modern Pentathlon, officially recognized by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM). It combines laser pistol shooting with middle-distance running in a series of alternating rounds. Athletes must complete several laps of running, each preceded by hitting five targets using a laser pistol within a limited time.

This discipline tests an athlete’s endurance, focus, and composure under pressure, as competitors must quickly transition between intense physical effort and precise shooting. Laser Run is not only the final and often decisive event in Modern Pentathlon competitions but also a popular standalone event promoted globally by UIPM for its accessibility and excitement.
